Enabling eyesight to enable better living

Allcargo Logistics, in collaboration with Bengal Service Society, helps provide eye care services to the underprivileged near Kolkata dock.

A serious eye ailment can significantly alter the quality of our life and our ability to earn a livelihood. Regular testing and check-ups, followed by necessary treatment are a must to maintain good eye health. But not everyone can afford these. To enable better access to eye health for the underprivileged, Allcargo Logistics in conjunction with Bengal Service Society, organized two health camps in Kolkata, West Bengal, for underserved communities, comprising of dock workers, daily wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, and small scale vendors who live near the dock.

The first camp was held at Maheshtala T.G. Road, Alampur, and the second one at Akra Fatak Bazar, Akra, Maheshtala, in close vicinity of the dock area.  Nearly 800 people visited the camps to avail of the medical check-ups and basic eye testing services, of these almost 150 were detected with cataract. Post Diwali, cataract operations for those who visited the first eye camp took place, while operations for those who were diagnosed in the second camp are currently underway. In addition, nearly 400 people were treated for spectacular malfunction and given free spectacles, while a few others were treated with medication.

Eye issues are given the least priority among the various health ailments, but any problem with the eye needs to be treated at the earliest to prevent damage later on. We, at Allcargo, are happy we could provide help to the community to enable them to see better.
