Children and adolescents are expected to cope with different compelling social situations they encounter. In order to manage social life successfully, it is necessary to have some life skills within them.

Life skills as the word describes, are the abilities required to effectively deal with demands and challenges of life. Students require several skills to lead a happy life with a positive attitude that enables them to become an engaged member of the society.

To increase more knowledge on life skills to the adolescent children Avashya Foundation,  along with the Prajna Counselling centre, organised life skills training Children of Mary well High school, Kinnigoli Town Apnchayath as well as Morarji Desai School, Nellithirtha, Kompadav Muchur Panchayath near Mangalore.

The resource person Mr. Jhon Clarance Miranda briefed  students to translate knowledge, attitude and values for handling real life situations, in helping them decide what to do, when to do and how to do it with ease.

The session began with an ice breaking activity that enabled participants the real objective of elaborated sessions on life skills building. Each participant was asked to introduce themselves using an adjective starting from the first alphabet of their name. This way everyone got the opportunity to get in flow of the session ahead.

The need of enhancing life skills among students was discussed in detail. Thinking skills, social skills and emotional skills and their types were taken up in detail one after the other. Followed by the discussions, use of various techniques (like discussion, role play, story telling etc.) to highlight the value/ importance of life skills in students were explained and deliberated. Various groups were made and each group was given a role play theme to enact and bring out various life skills that the characters of the play represented.

The training has  helped them develop self – confidence and higher self esteem, developed  greater sense of self awareness, capacity to self manage and tackle issues while understanding individual responsibilities.  The training has also prepared them for upcoming challenges, difficult situation as well as opportunities in their later life.
