The World Health Organization defines life skill as “Abilities for adoptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life”.
Avashya Foundation, Allcargo Logistics conducted 15 life skills education programs, in several schools of Mangalore and Bantwal region. In association with Prajna Counselling Centre for students, Lily Marry CT, who was our resource person for this program, assisted by her trainer Deepthi S, imparted 10 life skill programs to the students. Each skill was explained by conducting games or by stories.
Self-Awareness: It is described as part of emotional intelligence, as understanding yourself. A game of jumping in 30 seconds was conducted for assessment. As they jumped more than the number of times they wrote, it proved to them that they have got more capacity than they actually think they have. It is a realization that self-awareness is essential to lead a healthy life.
Creative Thinking: This describes the ability to think in different and unusual ways, to generate new ideas. Few students came forward to create a story by telling one sentence each. They came up with brilliant ideas of themes. As a skilled trainer one should ideally conduct more gaming sessions, for better understanding and awareness of oneself such as jumping on the floor, pricking the strove on hair, eating chocolate without flooding their arm, storytelling and many more. The trainer concluded the session by giving them an insight on how to engage in self-studies. The session closed with treats and smiling faces of children.
