Even though golf is a relatively niche sport in India, women’s golf has been picking up considerably in recent times with many talented lady golfers committing to their ambitions of bringing laurels to the country. Supporting them are corporates like Allcargo Group, which has taken a step to support three promising golfers, Avani Prashanth, Pranavi Urs, and Sneha Singh, for three years.

Creating history with a glorious victory

16-year-old Avani Prashanth created history by winning the Queen Sirikit Cup in Manila, becoming the first Indian to do so in the tournament’s history of 43 years. Avani, who hails from Bangalore, was part of the three-member Indian team that participated in the prestigious golf tournament held from February 22-24, 2023.

The Indian team, overall, finished second, which has been the best finish for India too, till date.

The Queen Sirikit Cup, also known as the Asia-Pacific Amateur Ladies Golf Team Championship, is one of the most prestigious annual tournaments that features the best female amateur golfers from across the Asia-Pacific region. Winners, in the past, have generally been from Japan, South Korea, Australia, and Thailand, among other countries.

A story of determination and perseverance

Avani’s journey to victory was not an easy one. She faced tough competition from some of the best amateur golfers, but her determination, skill, and focus kept her going.

Making this win an absolutely remarkable one is the fact that Avani won by a 10-stroke margin which is extremely uncommon, and is the highest margin of victory in the tournament’s history of 43 years.

“Since I was maybe eight or nine it’s been my dream to go and play in the Olympics. And back then, golf wasn’t even in the Olympics”, said Avani, while talking about her future aspirations.
