When it is about road safety, education matters. 

India ranks number one globally in road accident fatalities, with 1,31,714 people being killed in 2022. It ranks fourth globally in injuries due to road accidents, according to statistics from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Not only do road accidents cause loss of human life, but also affect the GDP of our country. In such a scenario, education and awareness truly matter, and that’s where leading industry players like Allcargo Supply Chain step up to make a difference.

The logistics industry, which serves as the backbone of every economy, relies heavily on road transportation to ensure timely and efficient movement of goods. As a critical sector, the logistics industry not only fuels economic growth, but also has a significant role to play in promoting road safety awareness. The importance of road safety and awareness for the logistics industry cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts the wellbeing of drivers, the security of cargo, and the punctuality and efficiency of the supply chain.  

Embodying its commitment to ensuring road safety, Allcargo Supply Chain, the contract logistics division of Allcargo Group, initiated Road Safety Projects in three states of Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, with fruitful completion of workshops in Malur, Hyderabad and Chennai. The workshops were curated by the Foundation of His Sacred Majesty (FHSM), a Chennai based non-profit organisation, in collaboration with Allcargo Supply Chain.  

Imparting knowledge, creating awareness  

Road accidents are multi-causal, and the primary factors responsible for them are human error, road environment, and vehicular condition. With two out of these three factors, simple precautions and actions on the part of drivers and vehicle owners can have a significant impact on safety of roads, and creating awareness among those directly impacted by it is the first and crucial step in ensuring safety.   

The workshop comprised of multiple modules and facets of road safety, ranging from awareness about over-speeding, usage of mobile phones while driving, adhering to traffic rules and etiquettes especially required in densely populated urban and peri-urban areas, awareness about drinking and driving, and methods of systematically countering driver’s fatigue. The workshops were conducted by safety officers from Allcargo Supply Chain, as well as experts related to the industry.   

Impact: Safeguarding manpower, assets, and wellbeing of society 

In India, over 50% of all road accidents and their fatalities are reported on National and State Highways, according to figures reported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Moreover, larger number accidents are reported on straight roads rather than curved or potholed roads, and speeding is a major contributor.  

In such a situation, ensuring that the logistics industry prioritises road safety by educating drivers, adhering to strict safety protocols, and investing in advanced technologies not only reduces the risk of accidents, but also contributes to the industry’s sustainability, and, ultimately, the well-being of society as a whole.
